Tonsillectomy & Adenoidectomy

Tonsillectomy & Adenoidectomy

Tonsillectomy is one of the most common surgical procedures in the world. If our patient is a child, adenoidectomy procedure is also done at the same time for certain. A false belief among the public is that the tonsils and adenoid are part of the immunity system and once they are removed, the immunity system will fail as well. This is not true. Tonsils and adenoid are just a lymph, in other words immune tissue inside our throat and part of our immunity system. Excluding them, there are hundreds of lymph glands at both sides of our throat which act as a part of our immunity system. Therefore, removal of tonsils and adenoid will not have any negative impact on the patient’s life. Quite the opposite, growth of the patient will accelerate since the inflammatory attacks will cease. After tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy operations, parents usually comment as “My child’s eating&drinking is now proper” and/or “He/she got taller” The operation lasts around 30 minutes and the anesthesia does not tire the child’s metabolism.
